Vélez de Benaudalla – Between the Mountains and the Sea

Vélez de Benaudalla is a pretty village in the mountains south of the Sierra Nevada. A blend of Moorish and Christian history. Water flows through the village from a multitude of springs.

There are multiple options for photo walks in this area. The two best are a circular river walk down to the river and back up into the village. The second is a linear walk from the village up to the dam.

River Walk

Depending on the season, this is usually the best walk in the area. The river banks are full of nature and especially in the spring there are wild flowers growing everywhere.

Vélez to Rules Dam

This one takes about three hours depending on how quickly people walk and how many photo stops there are. Some parts are quite steep but see the alternative below if you prefer an easier walk.

Instead of walking to the top of the dam, it’s possible to walk to the base. This area is great for a more industrial style of photography.

Infrared Option

The Vélez to the Rules Dam option really lends itself to some infrared photography. I have a camera that will take infrared photos. This can be brought to the walk if people would like to try this.
